Hello, David. These are beautiful. Can you give publication and copyright information for the images? I would especially be interested as to which of them have been published previously, and where each of those was first published.

Hi Sam. These are all original cabinet photographs in my collection. Where known I have credited the photographic studio that produced them; to my knowledge no copyright exists on the images. If any of them have been published before, I don’t have precise details with the exception of the Beauty Stone image which was recently used in the booklet accompanying the Chandos CD. A small number of the photographs were previously in the collection of Terence Rees and may appear in some of his writings. Hope this helps, David.

Hello, David! I have a cdv by F.A. Bridge of London a man in an elaborate sea captain’s uniform with a ship backdrop that I think is more theatrical than military. I have read that Bridge, a photographer, was also involved in the London theatre scene and was in G&S musicals….is there any way to find out if there Is any connection? It may be a long shot, but given the dates his studio operated in the street specified on the backmark, I couldn’t help but think Pinafore or Pirates! Thanks!

Quite possible! Would be lovely to see it if you have a scan. Quite coincidentally, I recently acquired a programme for a private subscription performance of Trial by Jury & The Waterman at the Town Hall, Kilburn on 28 December, 1882, by the North-West London Musical & Dramatic Society directed by Bridge. He isn’t in the Trial cast but he’s listed as playing Mr. Bundle in The Waterman. I’ve been trying to find out more about him (beyond what’s on the web), so any more info would be most useful.

Yes Bridge was a singer. I have written a biographical article which I see I cant add here, so email me ganzl @ xtra.co.nz

Hi David, do you supply hi res digital files of any of your photos? I’m particularly interested in the fairies from 1882 Savoy production of Iolanthe. For possible inclusion in a BBC documentary. We’re looking at how Christmas tree lights came to be known as fairy lights – this production used Joseph Swan’s miniaturised light bulbs in the fairy costumes – their head dresses and wands.

    Dear David (if I may),

Do you know if the illustration by Fritz Reiss for Ein Tag in Titipu, with a Mikado-figure in the centre surrounded by smaller drawings of the other characters, is in the public domain, and if so, where I can find a link to it? I’d like to reproduce it in an article I’m writing for the W.S. Gilbert Society Journal on the German translation. Many thanks in advance for your help!

    All best,
    Derrick McClure.
