John Hassall poster design for The Beauty Stone

Full colour poster paint poster design featuring Walter Passmore as the Devil in red on a green field. The Beauty Stone Savoy Theatre. Paper on card (stamped ‘Sketch from David Allen & Sons, Ltd. (London Office.) Registered Design. Copyright strictly reserved.’). Dimensions: H:66.3cm W:42.3cm.

Hassall’s diary for 27 May 1898 records, “Went at 2 to Savoy Theatre dress rehearsal of the Beauty Stone.” Then on 31 May 1898 he writes, “Took in 3 Beauty Stone sketches, Monk, Red faust on green, girl praying…” [“girl praying” has yet to surface]. As recorded in his workbooks, these designs were not marked as being used as posters. [From the John Hassall archive at the University of Essex, Colchester.]
